The first few pages of Maestro offer us a series of strong descriptions of Herr Keller (the piano teacher).

Easier option

If you are looking for an easier option, please click through to the worksheet.

  • The first column of the worksheet has the quotation.

  • The second column of the worksheet has space for you to summarise the quotation in everyday English.

  • The third column of the worksheet has some technique-based questions for you to answer.

Harder option

If you are looking for an opportunity to really develop your English skills, please complete the activities detailed below:

  • Note down the most powerful of those descriptions.

  • In each section of text, make sure you identify, and explain the impact of, the imagery, metaphors, similes and contrasts.  If you need to revise what  these literary techniques mean, check out the 'useful resources' tab.

  • Now that you have analysed the quotations, write a paragraph in which explain how the young Paul perceives Herr Keller.
